Tyres

The Landfill Directive bans whole and shredded tyres from landfill (from July 2003 and July 2006 respectively). Do not burn old tyres as this gives off dangerous fumes.

It's possible to have tyres re-conditioned - you may wish to check if this is appropriate to your tyres. Every retread produced means one less new tyre, thereby minimising the number of new tyres produced annually, extending the life of the original product and saving substantially on resources such as oil.

Tyres can be reused in the garden if you make a potato tower. Stack up some tyres, and fill with soil ad compost and plant in some seed potatoes. Tyres can also be used as a planter for flowers, and can be decorated with a spot of paint to make more attractive. Also, tyres can be used to make a home made wormery, if insulated with plenty of scrunched up paper. Read more
