RoWAN is Looking for New Board Members

RoWAN is also looking for new volunteer members for their Board to support our staff and projects and to guide the future of the organisation. RoWAN is a waste awareness charity based in Highland whose aim is to help people cut their waste. The charity was formed 10 years ago and has carried out a range of successful projects with communities and schools. It is currently funded to run a Zero Waste Volunteer Programme by Zero Waste Scotland, and to run a schools and communities project by the Climate Challenge Fund.

RoWAN is managed by a Management Committee of Directors and other members which meets once a month on a Tuesday evening, usually in Dingwall or surrounds. More Committee members are sought, particularly people with a strong interest in waste reduction and in addition experience of project management, people management, finance, community work or waste management. Travel expenses are paid but there is no other renumeration.

For information about the roles and responsibilities of Directors and members of the RoWAN Board click here.

It is envisaged that new members would initially join as co-opted members of the Board. Appointment as Directors may be possible at a later date.

For a discussion about what is involved in being a member of the Board, email zerowastevolunteers@rowan.org.uk or ring Caroline on 01349 867063 or 07730208849.

Volunteering to Help People Cut Waste

compost stallIf you are keen on composting, recycling, waste-free cooking or cutting waste in general then become a Zero Waste Volunteer. RoWAN have recently has received further funding from Zero Waste Scotland to recruit and work with volunteers in the Highlands to help spread the word on how people can cut waste by: cutting food waste, composting and using peat-free compost, reducing unwanted mail and recycling more. Keep on composting...

Although the Scottish Government subsidised compost bin scheme has now come to an end, you can still source compost bins online, at garden centres or of course, you can make your own.  Click here for a selection of video clips on how to build your own pallet bin, wormery or even tumbler!  Zero Waste Volunteers are still available to visit you at home to troubleshoot existing problem bins or get you started. Just call 01349 867063 or email zerowastevolunteers@rowan.org.uk

RoWAN is 10 years old!

Here at RoWAN we are celebrating the start of our 10th anniversary year.  RoWAN started out in 2001 by selling cheap compost bins, but quickly gained publicity with the famous Waste-Free Household project in 2003 that supported over 120 families in reducing the amount of waste they sent to landfill.  During the last 10 years, we have supported 180 volunteers and advised literally thousands of householders on waste reduction issues.  Read more

not just Master Composters anymore...

The Master Composter Programme, which RoWAN has successfully delivered since Oct 2008, is expanding to cover new campaigns from October 2010.  The new programme, known as Zero Waste Volunteers, will continue to provide home composting advice, but will also include themes such as Love Food Hate Waste, Peat-free Compost and Stop the Drop (unwanted mail).  Current volunteers are learning about the new topics with great enthusiasm - and of course we would like more folk to join our team of 20 across Ross and Cromarty and Inverness.  If you have benefitted from support and advice from RoWAN in the last wee while and would like to help spread the waste reduction message, please do get in touch with zerowastevolunteers@rowan.org.uk.

Pledging to Slim Your Bin: Does it work?

Recently we in the RoWAN office have not been out-and-about as much - but  we're still around and working hard. We've been doing a bit of research for our funders, INCREASEIII, about pledging and whether it works as a way of helping people to reduce their waste.
Through our Pledge to Slim Your Bin initiative over 600 people promised to take particular actions to reduce their household waste - anything from reducing food waste to buying a refillable drinks bottle to recycling more glass.

The good news is that PLEDGING WORKS! Of the people we were able to contact, over 60% say that pledging helped them reduce their waste. We're now contacting these pledgers a second time to find out if pledging does change behaviour, and whether these changes last as time goes on. Read more
