It takes a tampon six months to biodegrade while a plastic sanitary towel liner lasts indefinitely. It is possible to purchase bleach free, organic cotton sanitary products, reducing the environmental impact (Natracare, available from most health food shops). Alternatives to disposable sanitary products are also available, such as a rubber cup 'the keeper' or washable sanitary pads.
