Paint

Household paints are one of the most common household hazardous materials. Paints, varnishes and wood stains often contain solvents (VOCs) that evaporate to form ozone and other pollutants. Oil-based paints may also contain hazardous chemicals, including heavy metals. It is possible to buy natural pigment paints and low VOC paints, which are as effective as 'normal' paints but do not contain toxic substances or release harmful emissions. This sort of paint may be available through some D.I.Y. suppliers (e.g. B&Q for low VOC paints) or by mail order. There are some paint re-use schemes in Scotland, although none in Ross-shire:

In addition, a new Re>Paint scheme was launched at Moray Waste Busters in Forres.

If you have to dispose of paint, place the lid on the tin and put it out with household rubbish. Don’t put paint down the drain.
