Computers
Computers can be recycled at Highland Council Recycling Centres. However if you think your computer can be reused, Newstart or Reboot may be able to take it - see below. Click here for more information on WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment).
Newstart (Inverness) takes and can collect (locally) working computers. Monitors can be recycled at the main recycling centres in the Highlands. If you live in Ross-shire or Inverness and are concerned about wiping your hard drive of data before you donate or recycle your computer we can put you in touch with someone who can help. There is open source software that you can use to 'clean' your hard drive such as ncleaner which is free and is available at:
http://www.nkprods.com/ncleaner/
This will remove all sorts of rubbish from an existing system and can be used to clear free space on a hard drive. It has a shredder facility for the waste bin too.
Reboot ( in Forres) offers an 'environmentally safe and legal route to all your redundant IT problems. All equipment taken is securely wiped, using industry standard software, and then diagnostically assessed for re-use. If the hardware does not meet the current specification requirements, it will be carefully dismantled, and all components either re-used or recycled in an environmentally sound way.' For householders it is free to drop off any types of IT hardware and software. A Secure Datawipe costs £1.50. Collection charge depends on Postcode area. All working systems that meet the required specification will be re-built, cleaned and electrically tested for re-use, offering affordable technology for all.'
