About RoWAN

RoWAN (Ross-shire Waste Action network) works with communities in Ross-shire and Inverness-shire on waste awareness and waste prevention activities. We encourage and support householders, schools and businesses to reduce the amount of waste created and sent to landfill. This is achieved by:

  • raising awareness of the waste issue
  • providing practical support to reduce waste
  • promoting more sustainable waste management
  • working closely with other like-minded organisations
  • documenting and promoting project experience, to allow other communities to build upon successes and lessons learned
  • researching good practice elsewhere

Established in April 2001 by a group of like minded individuals, RoWAN's first activities involved distributing 2000 compost bins to the Ross-shire public.  Following this RoWAN set up firstly the 'Waste-Free Households' Project and then 'Waste-Free RCV' Project and latterly 'Towards Zero Waste Communities' funded by INCREASE III. RoWAN is now working on a Climate Challenge funded community project to reduce carbon emissions and as part of the Zero Waste Volunteers programme.

RoWAN is a member the Community Recycling Network for Scotland (CRNS).
